If not, he'll be devoured and shot back to the last checkpoint. If Ronan can run away or jump into another hiding place, he can stay alive. Once a demon spots Ronan and gets close enough, it will begin to devour Ronan. They aren't completely safe though - stay in one too long and the demons will still find him. The ghost-like auras are hiding places and Ronan can jump from one to the other with a single button press. With a button press, demons can be seen through the walls - this helps Ronan steer clear of them and time his approach for executions.
Avoiding them can be easier in the short run, and help get through the story quicker, but executing them will open up the area for exploration and collecting clues for Side Cases.
The choice is either to try and avoid them and use hiding places to reach the next area, or execute them. Many areas of the game are overrun by demons.
